4 days, 3 nights

Visit Observatory, enormous S.A.L.T. telescope, Louw museum, Matjiesfontein, etc.

Day 1:

Depart Mossel Bay, via George & Oudtshoorn. Follow Route 62 to Calitzdorp. Proceed via Huis River pass.

Just before we reach Ladismith, we deviate to the spectacular Seven Weeks Pass – unspoilt nature, a hidden gem.

This road leads us via “Vleiland” to Laingsburg. Pop in at the Flood Museum, in honour of the flood victims of 1981. Proceed to Matjiesfontein. Visit the popular Lord Milner Hotel.

From here via Verlatekloof to Sutherland, where we overnight.

Day 2:

Visit the Louw Museum, birth place of the well known Afrikaans poets N.P. van Wyk Louw and his brother W.E.G. Louw.

The Observatory is a must! Go on a guided tour in the morning. Visit the Dutch Reformed Church, once used as Fort and barracks for English troops during the Anglo Boer War.

Stargazing tonight, to view interesting objects in the sky through dedicated visitor telescopes. (approx. 2 hours).

Day 3:

Depart Sutherland. Travel to Matjiesfontein – visit the Railway Station, memories of the well known Afrikaans song: “Die trein na Matjiesfontein.”

Next in line is Touws River, De Doorns and Worcester.

Overnight Worcester.

Day 4:

Our route is via Robertson & Ashton, to Swellendam.

Visit Drostdy Museum in Swellendam.  

Continue coastal road, N2, via Heidelberg & Riversdale to Mossel Bay & George.
